The Frank Lloyd Wright San Francisco Field Office arrived at the Hagen History Center in Erie, Pennsylvania, much like flat-pack furniture: as plywood planks in boxes. It was 2020, and what was once the workspace of America’s most famous architect had spent the past 30 years tucked away in a Buffalo, New York, storage space. “The office has this long circuitous path of how it ends up in Erie, Pennsylvania,” says Caleb Pifer, the president and CEO of the Hagen History Center. “But the spoiler is we saved it.”

An interactive dive into the working life of Frank Lloyd Wright opens to the public this Friday, but it's going to take a road trip to see it. The immersive exhibition is built around the architect’s San Francisco field office, which for years sat disassembled in crates in the Buffalo Transportation Pierce-Arrow Museum before being shipped to Erie, Pa.'s Hagen History Center.

I was once asked, given my Irish heritage, whether I was a “poet” or a “brawler”! “A poet” I replied, cautioning that even the most soft-spoken Hibernian could become a scrapper under circumstances endemic to the “race”. Yet, there are true Irish gentlemen and in July 1978, on my first day on the surgical unit at Saint Vincent, I had the pleasure of making the acquaintance of just such a fellow. 

In the museum world, you just never know what, or who, is going to walk through the door. Back in April, we received a donation at the History Center of photos and documents belonging to local variety singer Shirley Gersims Sapper.

As my wife and I sorted through family memorabilia years ago, we came across a Western Union Telegram the message of which had so completely faded as to be unreadable.
