Vice Admiral Matthew J. Kohler is an Erie native whose distinguished 36-year naval career placed him at the forefront of American intelligence, cybersecurity, and information warfare. After entering the Navy in 1984, he rose through a series of leadership positions around the globe, ultimately serving as Director of Naval Intelligence, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Information Warfare, and Commander, Naval Information Forces. Throughout his career, he played a critical role in shaping the Navy's intelligence and cyber operations during a period of rapid technological change and evolving global threats.
Matthew Kohler attended Strong Vincent High School in Erie and graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), where he was recognized as an All-American swimmer. He is the son of Joseph and Sally Kohler, both longtime Erie educators.
He has four siblings, including his twin Michael, Ellen Croft, Natalie Kohler, of Erie and Rebecca Johnson and her husband of Erie. He worked as a Presque Isle lifeguard.
A graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School, Admiral Kohler earned a reputation as an innovative leader in intelligence, cyber strategy, and national security. His service included assignments with Fleet Cyber Command, the National Security Agency, U.S. Africa Command, and numerous operational intelligence organizations. He retired from active duty in 2020 as a three-star admiral and continues to advise public and private sector organizations on national security and strategic affairs.
Throughout his career, Admiral Kohler remained a proud son of Erie, returning to his hometown on several occasions, including as Mercyhurst University's 2018 commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient.
